Advanced digital engineering and new jobs support HS2 construction in the West Midlands

Advanced construction techniques, including digital engineering and off site manufacturing, are set to be utilised in the construction of HS2’s Phase One in the West Midlands.

LM, a joint venture of Laing O’Rourke and J. Murphy & Sons Ltd, is delivering the enabling works programme across the region, and will be using some of the latest techniques in construction to deliver five major bridge structures for the new high speed line.

Thirty-five new jobs are being created at Explore Manufacturing near Worksop to support the construction contract, which will see large structural segments built in a modern and controlled environment at the state-of-the-art pre-cast factory in Nottinghamshire, and then brought to site for assembly.

Richard Kirkham, LM Project Director said:

As well as the new factory jobs, we have worked with educational bodies to develop training programmes for apprentices, with four students sponsored in a partnership with the National College for High Speed Rail in Birmingham. We’re also supporting several local programmes to offer skills to the unwaged and ex-offenders, which helps the communities affected by the project.

Balfour Beatty VINCI is set to be the largest HS2 recruiter in the West Midlands, offering thousands of jobs to local people

Balfour Beatty VINCI, working on the West Midlands section of HS2’s Phase One, is one of the largest employers on the programme, contributing to the thousands of jobs being created by all Joint Ventures on the programme.

Nineteen higher level and degree apprentices are already working on HS2 at Balfour Beatty VINCI with 29% of new recruits being female. These Apprentice Civil Engineers, Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers are already making a direct contribution to BBV’s work programme. The young people at BBV are already turning heads with Matthew Lofts, one of BBV’s young talented engineers scooping the Future Face of Industry 2018 at the regional awards.

Thousands of people will be required to construct HS2 through the region and Balfour Beatty VINCI will be offering numerous opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds within the West Midlands. BBV is working closely with the National College of High Speed Rail as well as local authorities, and charities such as The Princes Trust and Remploy to bring new people into the sector and close the skills gap. 

Shilpi Akbar, Skills, Employment and Education lead at Balfour Beatty VINCI, said: 

Our planning and delivery in how the region can access these jobs is crucial. We will be working with Jobcentre Plus and the National Careers’ job brokerage service to promote these opportunities. We aim to also attract local unemployed and underemployed young people and adults from diverse backgrounds including people who may need additional or specialist support.

Young women are enormously underrepresented in rail and engineering and yet we stand to make a massive contribution. It makes sense to use the best and brightest to advance the pace of technological innovation and so opening up the industry to encourage women to join is a fantastic way to broaden the talent pool.

Eiffage Kier boosts opportunities for apprentices and ex-military as a result of HS2 contract

Eiffage Kier joint venture has recruited 20 apprentices to work on its contract to deliver main works on the central section of HS2’s Phase One between London and Birmingham. This includes a number of High Speed Rail Infrastructure Technician (HSRIT) apprentices through a strategic partnership with the National College for High Speed Rail in Birmingham.

David Lowery, Eiffage Kier’s Director, said:

Our apprentices represent a diverse mixture of ethnicities and ages, which range from 19 to 36. Two of our apprentices have joined us from previous long-term careers in other sectors, including an ambulance driver and a National Trust employee.
