HS2 will be a catalyst for Wigan businesses
High speed services will offer improved access to suppliers, skills and customers for local businesses. Wigan Council sees the new integrated high speed station as a focal point for regeneration in the town by raising Wigan’s profile and encouraging growth.
HS2 is integral to local plans to drive business growth
It will create jobs and secure investment years before it arrives. A 10 year masterplan has been agreed with the Canal and River Trust to redevelop Wigan Pier Quarter, just 10 minutes’ walk from Wigan North Western, as a retail and leisure destination.
The Council is also investing £1.3m to make Market Place the cultural and social heart of the town, to allow the hosting of public events and boost the night-time economy with family-friendly activities.
A new mixed use development at Westwood Park could create up to 1,000 jobs. The site will benefit from the integrated high speed station and from improved motorway access, putting into action the joined-up think that strategic transport hubs require.
Wigan Council is identifying additional new major employment sites to attract further high-quality jobs and investment.
91 North West businesses have already delivered work on HS2
Over 2,000 businesses across the nation have delivered work for HS2. Half of these are small and medium sized businesses and that number will grow as the pace of construction increases.
